“5 Biggest Tax Breaks for the Self-Employed,” by Jeff Reeves, USA Today

“Without the ready-made benefits package provided by larger corporations, many self-employed Americans also must be self-insured. Thankfully, premiums for medical insurance as well as dental and long-term care insurance are deductible from your taxes. The deduction can be very large, but also saves you by preventing the ‘individual mandate’ penalty suffered by uninsured taxpayers with the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare. While it’s uncertain what will happen with the ACA going forward, for tax year 2016 there is a penalty of $695 per adult or 2.5% of household income if you’re uninsured, whichever amount is greater.” LTC Comment (from

“GAO: CMS needs better data to prevent HCBS overpayments, fraud,” by Lois A. Bowers, McKnight’s Senior Living

“The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services needs better data to be able to ensure that it does not overpay for personal care services and to reduce the risk of fraud occurring, the Government Accountability Office said in a January report made public on Monday.  Medicaid spent approximately $80 billion to provide assistance with activities of daily living in home- and community-based settings such as assisted living communities in 2014, the report noted. The amount exceeds spending on institutional long-term care, according to the GAO, and is expected to increase along with the demand for such services.” LTC Comment (from

“New Thinking About Reverse Mortgages,” by Jeff Brown, Wall Street Journal

“In recent years . . . more financial advisers have warmed up to the idea of homeowners taking a reverse-mortgage line of credit when they are as young as 62, as a way to boost their nest egg. The key to this strategy is that the credit line grows over time, by amounts tied to the course of interest rates, and the unused portion can be converted to a substantial monthly income years later. And today, with inflation and interest rates widely expected to rise, these credit lines could be particularly valuable.” LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center

“Long Term Care Insurance Industry Paid $8.65 Billion in Claims,” by Jesse Slome, ExpertClick

“The nation’s long term care insurance companies paid $8.65 Billion in claim benefits to some 280,000 individuals in 2016 according to the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance.” LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform): By comparison, Medicare and Medicaid paid 55.7% of $156.8 billion total nursing home expenditures in 2015 and 75.7% of $88.8 billion spent on home health care.  For why government pays so much, private insurance so little, and why it matters, see LTC Bullet:  So What If the Government Pays for Most LTC?, 2015 Data Update, Tuesday, December 6, 2016. “Put long-term care within reach,” by Laurie Jinkins and Norm Johnson, Seattle Times

“Our legislation would create a long-term care insurance benefit to help seniors and their families pay for long-term services and support while protecting seniors’ retirement savings and assets. Funds from a 0.49 percent assessment deducted from workers’ pay would fund the trust and be disbursed through a program overseen by a public-private commission. Workers would be eligible to draw on the benefits of the trust after they’ve worked three of the past six years, or 10 years total.” LTC Comment (from Stephen A. “Opinion: We can change Medicare without hurting Americans – the answer lies in this plan,” by Neeraj Sood, MarketWatch

“[A] significant cost-control mechanism already at work within Medicare could be expanded with small changes to better benefit both patients and the federal budget. The mechanism is Medicare Advantage, which pays private insurers a flat fee or premium to manage the health care of beneficiaries, instead of a check every time a patient received care from a different provider, as happens with traditional Medicare.” LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform): Perhaps this would be a less radical, more widely acceptable way to “privatize” Medicare. Opinion: We can change Medicare without hurting Americans – the
