“How Did Life Begin? Key Alzheimer’s Protein Has Surprising Tie to the Primordial Soup,” by Dana Dovey, Newsweek
Quote: “Amyloids are a type protein notoriously known for their association with Alzheimer’s disease. Now it appears they may have played a role in the formation of life on Earth. A new study showing that amyloids are able to self-replicate, and thus could have quite possibly been life’s original building blocks.
“In an experiment, researchers from the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry in Switzerland showed that amyloids can create short peptides, a chain or two or more amino acids. Two years earlier, the same group showed that amyloids can form spontaneously. The combination of these two findings suggest that amyloids may be the right candidate for the origin of life.”
