Coming Soon: New Medicare ID Cards With New Medicare Numbers

Starting in April, CMS is issuing new Medicare ID cards to help prevent fraud and fight identity theft.

New-Medicare-ID-Card-imageWhat you need to know

  • CMS is removing Social Security Numbers from Medicare ID cards.
  • Between April 2018 and April 2019, CMS will mail each beneficiary a new Medicare ID card with a unique new Medicare number.

There’s no impact to enrollment processes
You can continue to follow the normal enrollment processes. Starting in April, just be sure to provide the number from the most current Medicare card (either the Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) or the new Medicare number) on the enrollment form.

How does this affect reports?
In Producer World reports, we changed the name of the old HICN field. It’s now the Medicare Number field. Initially, HICNs will continue to display in this field. You’ll start seeing new Medicare numbers instead of HICNs beginning in April 2018, and then going forward as we receive them from CMS. We also recently removed the SSN field from the enrollment-related reports.

Resources to help educate your clients
