“Ultra-processed foods linked to cognitive decline, stroke”

Ultra-processed foods linked to cognitive decline, stroke,” by Kristen Fischer, McKnights LTC News

“Ultra-processed foods — think cookies, chips and soda — are tied to cognitive decline and stroke, a new report finds. The study was published Wednesday in Neurology. Though it doesn’t show that the foods directly cause memory and thinking problems or stroke, it reveals an association.”

LTC Comment, Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform:

Just about everything has been associated, by cause or correlation, with dementia onset. So I don’t take such findings very seriously. But the connection between healthy diet/lifestyle and cognitive longevity seems solid. Combine that with another study showing a connection between socio-economic prosperity and cognitive health (LTC Clipping forthcoming) and you have an interesting connection. Wealthier people can afford better diets and tend toward them.
