Remembering Wild Kingdom's Jim Fowler

Jim Fowler — naturalist, explorer, wildlife expert and star of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom — has passed away. Jim passed away peacefully on May 8, at the age of 89.

Jim was known to generations as co-host and later host of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. He was also a favorite guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and wildlife correspondent on NBC’s Today Show.

Jim lived an incredible life as a naturalist and spokesperson for wildlife and the natural world. Before his television career began, he carried out expeditions to Africa where he lived with the Kalahari bushmen, and to South America where he conducted groundbreaking research on the harpy eagle and the Andean condor.

Jim’s family, including his wife, Betsey; son, Mark; and daughter, Carrie, wanted to share the following thoughts with his Mutual of Omaha family:

“Jim loved representing Mutual of Omaha and was honored to have played a part in Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. What adventures he had with Marlin and Peter! He was a Georgia boy at heart who loved his family and, in recent years, driving around in his vintage jeep on our wildlife preserve in Georgia. He loved to sit outside watching birds in his homemade bird feeder while his grandchildren played in the yard. He loved reminiscing about the good old days filming for Wild Kingdom as he told stories around the campfire with friends and family. Jim was always focused on the big picture of nature and our human relationship with it. He said that how we treat the earth is directly related to the human quality of life and our own future. Jim’s wish has always been to inspire future generations about the wildlife and the natural world … and to encourage them to get outside and explore!”

Jim was a true wildlife icon and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
