“How Nursing Homes Can Destroy Families”

How Nursing Homes Can Destroy Families,” by Jeanne Croteau, Forbes

Quote:

“When your loved one is admitted to a nursing facility, you are at their mercy. There is a significant imbalance of power in many ways and many families may find themselves feeling completely lost. In all likelihood, you’ve never navigated the confusing, treacherous waters associated with aging in this country and most of us can’t really tell the difference between Medicare and Medicaid, at that level. As such, we rely on the guidance of so-called experts to help us understand. We expect that the people with the most experience will hold our hands and help us through this difficult period, however, this is not always the case. Unfortunately, the situation for seniors continues to deteriorate and, as family members try to grapple with mounting issues it can take a toll on their relationships.”

LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform):

Is the problem here really nursing homes and the people who work in them? Or is the root of the problem nursing homes’ primary funding source, Medicaid, which pays less than the cost of the care. Pay privately and you access the best care in the preferred venue including avoiding nursing homes when that’s feasible.
