Nursing Home Industry Wants Trump To Rescind Staffing Mandate,” by Jordan Rau, KFF Health News

“Covid’s rampage through the country’s nursing homes killed more than 172,000 residents and spurred the biggest industry reform in decades: a mandate that homes employ a minimum number of nurses. But with President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the industry is ramping up pressure to kill that requirement before it takes effect, leaving thousands of residents in homes too short-staffed to provide proper care. The nursing home industry has been marshaling opposition for months among congressional Republicans — and some Democrats — to overrule the Biden administration’s mandate. Two industry groups, the American Health Care Association and LeadingAge, have sued to overturn the regulation, and 20 Republican state attorneys general have filed their own challenge.”

LTC Comment, Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform:

“This story also ran on The New York Times. It can be republished for free.” More misdirected umbrage from the people who brought you “Dying Broke.” The problem with the staffing mandate is not its good intentions to improve long-term care. The problem is demanding better LTC without paying for it, further tying LTC providers in regulatory knots. This criticism and the spend down anecdotes unsupported by evidence in Dying Broke are likewise disingenuous. To get to the bottom of the problem and the solution, read the Paragon Health Institute’s “Long-Term Care: The Problem” and “Long-Term Care: The Solution” and watch this “virtual LTC event” featuring age wave visionary Ken Dychtwald and leading LTC researchers.
