“Michigan inching toward privatization of long-term care”

Michigan inching toward privatization of long-term care,” by Kimberly Marselas, McKnight’s LTC News

Quote: “Michigan is laying the groundwork to privatize its $2.8 billion Medicaid nursing home and long-term care services. A brief proposal included in the state’s 2017-2018 budget calls on the Department of Health and Human Services to ‘explore the implementation of a managed care long-term support service’ by July 1. … At least 22 states are exploring ways to integrate long-term care services into their Medicaid programs to reduce costs, increase services and improve quality, according to a report issued by the Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation.”

LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform):

Privatizing, i.e. getting government out of something the private sector can do better, is generally a good thing. But that is not what this is. Adding another layer to the LTC service delivery and financing system only squeezes the already tight Medicaid resources further, hurting access and quality.
