“CDC: More than 20% of 85+ adults need ADL assistance”

“CDC: More than 20% of 85+ adults need ADL assistance,” by Lois A. Bowers, McKnight’s Senior Living

“More than 20% (21.7%) of adults aged 85 or more years needed help with activities of daily living in the first half of the year, according to the latest data released Tuesday by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. The finding means that adults in that age range are more than twice as likely as those aged 75 to 84 (8.5%) and more than six times as likely as adults aged 65 to 74 (3.4%) to need ADL assistance, based on data from the January-to-June National Health Interview Survey.”

LTC Comment (from Stephen A. Moses, President, Center for Long-Term Care Reform):

Alas, age 85 is the tipping point for so many. Furthermore, in 2031 baby boomers will begin turning 85 and that process will continue for 18 years [boomers were born between 1946 and 1964] placing a huge strain on all of the entitlement programs. That’s roughly when Social Security and Medicare will have used up their “trust funds” forcing benefit cuts. Medicaid, the dominant payor for long-term care, relies on (1) offsets from Social Security benefits recipients must contribute toward the cost of their care and (2) higher reimbursements from Medicare. So Medicaid is likely a goner too around the same time. Happy New Year!
